Prof. Ting Liao on “Building Trust in Tech Products”
From Edmund Fogarty II
Presented on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 for the SSE Dean’s Virtual Seminar Series: The Future of Systems featuring Prof. Ting Liao on “Building Trust in Tech Products: Incorporating Emotions in the Engineering Design Process.”
In this talk, Prof. Liao will discuss research on how emotions may affect users’ interactions with products that are empowered by artificial intelligence. She will introduce a new design approach that takes into account emotional connections between users and products, with the goal of enriching user experience and enhancing product adoption.
Liao is an assistant professor at the School of Systems and Enterprises. She is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, where she also earned a Master of Science in mechanical engineering specializing in design methodology and mechatronics. Liao earned her Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her current research is built upon the concept of user-centered design and crosses disciplinary boundaries involving engineering design, experimental psychology and data science.
The "SSE Dean’s Virtual Seminar Series: The Future of Systems" is presented by Dean Yehia Massoud and offers weekly lectures each Wednesday at noon for Stevens undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, administration and guests. At each session, SSE faculty present a 20-minute lecture, followed by a five-to-ten minute Q&A session.
The series has been created to keep students informed on the advances of faculty research, and the mission of the School of Systems and Enterprises as a leader in systems science and engineering. Each lecture will be recorded and made available on the School of Systems and Enterprises Kaltura channel for those who are unable to attend the live Zoom sessions.
