Presented on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 for the "SSE Dean’s Virtual Seminar Series: The Future of Systems," this videos features Prof. Paul Grogan on the “Future of Earth Science Space Missions.”
In this talk, Prof. Grogan will discuss how space missions for Earth science, which operate spacecraft that look back down at Earth rather than out into space, can help us better understand the planet on which we live.

Prof. Grogan will describe how innovations in launch systems, high-quality instruments on board small satellites, greater availability of commercial space platforms and new opportunities for international collaboration precede a transformative period where satellites dynamically point instruments to monitor real-time events, carry high-performance onboard processing capabilities for increasing autonomy and share information across system boundaries to trigger alerts and actions.
Dr. Grogan is an assistant professor in the School of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens. He directs the Collective Design (CoDe) Lab, which studies how engineers design systems with distributed authority, resulting in collective decision-making problems that cannot be solved with traditional systems engineering methods. The research builds on theory and tools in design science, economics and information science to understand and improve engineering design processes. He earned a Ph.D. in engineering systems from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The SSE Dean’s Virtual Seminar Series: The Future of Systems is presented by Dean Yehia Massoud and offers weekly lectures each Wednesday at noon for Stevens undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, administration and guests. At each session, SSE faculty will present a 20-minute lecture, followed by a five-to-ten minute Q&A session.
The series has been created to keep students informed on the advances of faculty research, and the mission of the School of Systems and Enterprises as a leader in systems science and engineering. Each lecture will be recorded and made available on Kaltura for those who are unable to attend the live Zoom sessions.
